Environment

In 2024, we strengthened our ability to reduce environmental impacts across the product lifecycle. We also expanded our circular economy efforts and launched a system that will help us minimize energy use globally.

Innovation for Fuel Efficiency and Alternative Fuels

We developed solutions to lower transportation emissions in three ways. The first was our continued enhancement and efficiency of traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) systems. Here, we focused particularly on meeting stringent regulatory requirements, and on full system improvements. 

Our second strategy was to further develop alternative fuel technologies for use with lower-carbon fuels, or with reuse of carbon capture in fuels. These fuel types include ethanol, compressed natural gas, and hydro-treated vegetable oil.  

Finally, we invested further in the development of alternative fuel systems for use with zero-carbon fuels, such as ammonia and hydrogen for both fuel cell and internal combustion engine (H2ICE) applications.

Innovation for the Aftermarket

Our aftermarket portfolio includes diesel and gasoline fuel systems, engine management, and chassis and maintenance solutions, in addition to training, diagnostics, and test equipment.  

In 2024, our array of parts continued to support existing vehicles – both ICE and EVs – to maintain fuel and energy efficiency, meet the latest emissions standards, and extend vehicle lifespans. Improving the efficiency and longevity of these vehicles helps to reduce their environmental impact, as well as offering economic benefits.  

Alongside our high-quality products, we trained more than 1,500 technicians, delivering over 20,000 hours of training across 10 European locations, with a strong emphasis on extending vehicle lifespans.

Innovation for a Circular Economy

PHINIA continued to expand its contribution to the circular economy in 2024. Our Design For Environment process helps to quantify and reduce lifecycle emissions of our new products, aiming to reduce carbon emissions, and water and energy consumption in the design phase. 

We also piloted management software to evaluate the environmental impact of select products throughout their life cycles. This is in addition to expanding life cycle training across our business. 

Finally, we are a leader in remanufacturing vehicle parts, with six global facilities. Approximately 12.3 million pounds of material was processed for remanufacturing from 2011 to 2024 at our largest reman facility in Troy, Michigan, USA.

Energy Monitoring and Measurement

In 2024, we developed our Global Energy Monitoring System, a powerful software platform that delivers robust insights, analysis, and data. It now covers sites representing 85% of our energy consumption, helping us identify and drive energy efficiencies, and reduce carbon emissions.  

Last year we also enhanced site collaboration and data stewardship, expanded resource monitoring, and laid the groundwork for AI-driven analytics that will enable further efficiency and improvement.

Environmental Management

At each of our manufacturing sites, dedicated Environmental Managers champion sustainability by advancing impactful initiatives, fostering innovative solutions, and collaborating closely with local teams to maintain environmental compliance. 

We are highly proactive, rigorously evaluating practices and identifying opportunities to reduce or eliminate potential environmental impacts. 

In 2024, we reaffirmed our commitment to the environment by maintaining certification of ISO 14001 environmental management systems at all our manufacturing plants that supply to an OEM. Our manufacturing facilities continue to implement ISO 50001 energy management systems certifications as we strive to improve our energy efficiency and carbon footprint.

Energy, Waste, and Water

As part of our energy reduction strategy, our annual energy consumption decreased by 4.5% in 2024 compared to 2023. Our energy intensity improved by 1.8% in 2024 compared to 2023. Two of our plants in China initiated projects focused on recycling waste, reducing wastewater, and saving energy.

Last year, we used a total of 525,869 cubic meters of water. To drive further improvement, each of our facilities will undergo an assessment process in 2025 to identify opportunities for conservation, recycling, and potential technology upgrades.  We also completed a sanitary wastewater treatment system at our San Luis Potosi site in Mexico.

GHG Emissions

We measure emissions annually and provide regular updates to our Strategy Board, Sustainability Steering Committee, and Sustainability Council. As our environmental strategies mature, we expect to further reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across our global facilities, and also further minimize our energy consumption.

In 2024, our scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions decreased by 11.7% from 2023 and by 36% from 2020. As a result, our GHG intensity improved by 9.2% in 2024 compared to 2023.

PHINIA strives to constantly improve the efficiency of our products for our customers. At the same time, we recognize the benefit of reducing GHG emissions linked to our operations. PHINIA has established a near-term emissions reduction goal of 50% by 2030 from a 2020 base year for absolute scope 1 and scope 2 GHG emissions.
